Marionette Lines, Nasolabial Lines and Nose to Mouth Lines

What are Nasolabial Folds (Nose to Mouth Lines)?

The nasolabial folds (or nose to mouth lines as they are commonly known) are the lines that run from the outside of the nose down to the sides of the mouth. When we smile or laugh, these lines are apparent, hence they are sometimes also called smile or laugh lines. As we age, usually in our late thirties onwards, these lines start to become more noticeable and permanent. This is due to a number of factors including sun damage, the loss of elasticity and collagen in the skin, and diminishment of the fat layer in the cheeks causing the skin to sag. It is at this point that many people start to consider treating these lines. This is the most common area that fillers are used.

What are Marionette Lines (Sad Lines)?

Marionette lines are long vertical lines that are found at the corners of the mouth. They are important landmarks for the general impression of the face. Deep ones might give the face an expression of being dissatisfied, grim or even scornful. Marionette lines are an ideal target for injectable fillers. They appear with advancing age and some people never get them, depending on facial structure and anatomy.

This is the second most common area that fillers area used.

How do we treat these lines at Facial Aesthetics Northern Ireland?

We typically treat these lines with advanced dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers offer the most effective non-surgical method for treating these lines. The non-permanent dermal fillers we use present a non-invasive and cost effective means of treatment. Most importantly, they have a proven safety record.

How long does the treatment take?

It usually takes around 30 minutes.

How quickly will I notice an effect?

Softening of these lines is immediately noticeable. However, results gradually improve over the following two weeks.

How long will the effect last?

The results typically last 9-12 months although the exact length of time will depend on the structure of your skin and other factors such as lifestyle, age and the degree of perfection demanded by the individual. Additional touch up treatments can be performed at any time after the initial treatment.

Are there any side effects?

This is a very safe procedure in the hands of our highly experienced cosmetic injector. Common side-effects include redness, swelling and mild lumpiness. These usually resolve within a few hours. It is uncommon to get any bruising.

Is this treatment reversible?

Yes. Treatments with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can be reversed by dissolving the product.
